EU DIRECTIVE ON VICTIMS OF CRIME

On the 18th May 2011, the European Commission published a draft directive in the area of victim’s rights establishing minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime.

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr Alan Shatter, T.D. has secured the Government’s agreement to seek the approval of both Houses of the Oireachtas to opt in to the draft EU Directive which will allow Ireland to play a full role in the negotiation of the Directive over the next eighteen months.

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBB) is also involved with this project. The different European delegations were asked to nominate experts in the area of victims’ rights to assist with their response.

AdVIC was very pleased to accept the invitation of the bar council of Ireland to get involved.
