On April 28th, AdVIC together with other victim support organisations, as well as individual contributors with lived experience, attended the Oireachtas Justice Committee as part of its examination of “Supports and Experiences of Victims of Crime.”

We were invited to share the experiences of families affected by homicide and to highlight the challenges they continue to face in the aftermath of violent loss.

In our submission, we focused on key areas including:

  • the need for better coordination across agencies and a clearer pathway for families
  • access to long-term, trauma-informed psychosocial support
  • reform of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme
  • the establishment of an independent Victims’ Commissioner to strengthen accountability, oversight and victims’ voices at national level

We welcomed the opportunity to contribute to this important discussion on how supports and responses for victims of crime can be strengthened. With the right structures and supports in place, we can provide a more effective and humane response to families affected by homicide.
